Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s was thrilled to present the Stamps & Covers of Great Britain Auction at 399 Strand on 30 April. An undoubted highlight of the auction was a superb 1966 (18 August) World Cup Winners first day cover, bearing the complete set of signatures from the victorious England team including legendary players such as Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Bobby Charlton. Estimated at £250-300, the lot ultimately was sold at auction at SGBaldwins.com for £1800 including fees.
The 1966 World Cup first day cover was commissioned to commemorate the 1966 FIFA World Cup, issued on the first day of its availability to the public. Varying greatly in value, they remain popular collectors' items, with those most especially coveted being the ones signed by players or coaches from the English winning team. Bearing signatures from the full team, this particular cover is exceedingly rare.
