The world of philately is set to witness another landmark event as Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s presents Part 2 of the Hay Morgan Collection, an extraordinary assemblage of King George V British Commonwealth stamps. Following the success of the first sale, this second instalment promises to be just as remarkable, featuring a diverse selection of rarities, errors, proofs, and historic covers from across the Commonwealth. The auction will take place on 26 March 2025 at 10:30 GMT at 399 Strand, London, offering collectors an unparalleled opportunity to acquire pieces from one of the most complete KGV collections ever assembled.
The Hay Morgan Collection is the result of a 40-year passion for philately, cultivated by a British collector who first caught the bug from his father, an avid collector of King George VI issues. What started as a focus on Nevis, inspired by his honeymoon destination, soon evolved into an expansive collection covering the entire British Commonwealth. The depth and quality of the collection make it a treasure trove for commonwealth philatelists.
One of the standout aspects of Part 2 is its strong focus on Newfoundland’s historic airmail issues. Among the highlights is the 1919 3c ‘Hawker’ airmail stamp, an iconic rarity that commemorates the first transatlantic attempt by aviators Hawker and Grieve. Another exceptional piece is the 1927 ‘De Pinedo’ flown cover, a key artifact from Francesco De Pinedo’s ambitious transatlantic flight. The sale also features the 1921 Air 35c red with an inverted overprint, a true rarity with only sixteen known examples, and a spectacular 1930 ‘Columbia’ flown cover, tied to the legendary Harbour Grace to London flight.

Each and every lot has been meticulously examined and described by Stanley Gibbons’ expert philatelists, ensuring that bidders can participate with absolute confidence. The collection’s meticulous curation and the exceptional condition of its stamps and covers are a testament to the dedication and passion of the collector, who remains an active member of the Royal Philatelic Society of London. Even as this part of his collection finds new homes, his keen interest in World War I ‘G.R.I.’ overprints, Indian Feudatory States, and Nevis continues to drive his collecting pursuits.
Mark your calendars for 26 March 2025, and join us at Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s in London for what promises to be an unforgettable event.
