Auction Preview: The Dr. Arnold Brickman Collection of Rhodesia Double Heads | Part 1

Arnold Brickman - Rhodesia 1910-13 vignette die proof

The Arnold Brickman Collection of Rhodesia Double Heads, part one of which will be auctioned by Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s on 10th December 2024, represents one of the finest assemblies of this iconic issue. Carefully curated over years, Dr Arnold Brickman’s collection includes rare proofs, specimens, and issued stamps, each with its own story, making this auction a significant event in philately.

Lot 1 - Rhodesia 1910-13 vignette die proof

The Rare Proofs

The auction opens with a selection of rare proof material, most notably Lot 1—a die proof of the vignette that gave this issue its “Double Head” nickname. Featuring the portraits of Queen Mary and King George V, this proof is particularly notable for showing the full design, including medals below the king’s left shoulder, which were later truncated on the issued stamps. Once part of the Alan Uria collection, this proof offers a unique glimpse into the original artistry of the series.

Lot 9 - Rhodesia 1910-13 £1 rose-scarlet and bluish black perf SPECIMEN

Unique Specimen Stamps

Among the specimen stamps are pieces prepared for both Universal Postal Union distribution and presentation purposes. Lot 9 is a standout: a top-marginal £1 stamp from position four of the sheet, perforated with the word “Specimen” at the foot. Considered part of a unique set prepared for an influential collector, this stamp has an illustrious provenance, having appeared in both the Robert M. Gibbs and “County” collections. It has been off the market for more than twenty years, adding to its allure for collectors.

Lot 262 - SG 143a 5d lake-brown and green mint

Rare Issued Stamps

The issued stamps section features two exceptional rarities. Lot 262 is a superb example of the elusive 5d lake-brown and green Double Head, one of the rarest stamps in the issue. With only about a dozen known, this stamp stands out for its impressive centring, vibrant colour, and certification from the Royal Philatelic Society. It was previously part of the Tom Osdene collection, adding further prestige.

Lot 400 - Rhodesia 1910-13 3s bright green and dull claret perf 14

Equally impressive is Lot 400, an upper left corner pair of the 3s bright green and dull claret. The vivid colour contrast between the vignette and frame is striking, and it holds added appeal due to a positional feature: the right stamp shows the constant plate flaw, known as the “short gash in Queen’s right ear.” These plate flaws are invaluable to collectors, helping to identify specific printings and adding a layer of intrigue to this already desirable piece.

The “Dyer” Cover: The Collector’s Favourite

Lot 102, known as the “Dyer” cover, is a personal favourite of Dr Brickman and arguably the most captivating piece in the collection. This cover features one of Rhodesia’s rarest errors—a 1d bright carmine imperforate between vertical pair, believed to be the only example of this error used on an envelope. Previously a star item in the Robert M. Gibbs collection, this cover combines rarity and historical significance in a single, visually striking piece.

A Must-See Auction

This preview offers only a glimpse of what awaits in the first part of the Arnold Brickman Collection of Rhodesia Double Heads. The auction, hosted by Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s on 10th December, promises to be a landmark event for collectors of classic philately. Whether attending in person or online, enthusiasts will find this a rare opportunity to acquire some of the most coveted items from this remarkable collection.
