In 1918 the US Post Office accidentally issued a stamp with the image of an upside-down plane. We know how they feel.
When you’ve been serving the collecting community for as long as we have, you know that mistakes can happen. From Presidents with an extra finger, gymnasts who defy the law of gravity and, of course, inverted airplanes, errors on stamps or coins have become the stuff of collecting legends.
Hopefully, our own recent mistake won’t be remembered for quite so long.
As you probably know, we recently made the decision to rebrand our auction house under the Baldwin’s name. What you also probably know is that it didn’t go down too well.
Fortunately, a business doesn’t survive for more than XXX years if it can’t admit a misstep – and correct it.
We’re thankful that our customers, friends, partners and team could be so honest about what was wrong with the change we made – and how we could put things right.
Now, our auction house will carry both the Baldwin’s and Stanley Gibbons name, reflecting the extraordinary history and global reputation of both brands. And this is more than just messing around with the logo – it’s about a commitment to collectors of stamps, coins, trading cards and more, that the service, and specialist advice, they receive from us will be at the same high standards they’ve always expected.
There’s no way we could pass this off as anything other than a misjudgement – and one we have no qualms about putting right. Our plane is flying the right way up once more, some misguided ideas have been jettisoned, and our journey continues.
